Subject: [Leica] Nikon D2X, or wait for the actual production models

As neither a Nikon or Canon digital guy, I have to say I am VERY
suspicious of that D2x review on Luminous landscape. Say what you will
about the MkIIs, but the lack of noise at every iso is truly astounding.
So am really suspicious of the reviewer's claim that the D2x does a
better job than the MKII of producing low noise at higher isos -
especially given his poo-pooing of the need for high isos in the first
place; note that he is a landscape photographer, for whom high isos seem
to have little meaning. ;-)

On the other hand, the higher iso images he posted are damn impressive.

As to this business that Nikon's essentially in trouble because Canon is
grabbing all the business...I think most folks on this list lose sight
of the fact that in terms of the pro bodies and lenses, the real
business for both these manufacturers is photo journalism - and there
it's sales to newspapers and media companies. And newspapers and media
companies recognize the need to toss equipment and restock every couple
of years - so the potential market shifts back and forth. One year Canon
may be ahead, and get the business - the next it can go to Nikon.

On the other hand, when it comes to the prosumer market, that's another
story entirely - and that market undoubtedly dwarfs the pj market, and
that and the p&s market are probably what make the difference between
survival and extinction for these folks. And when it comes to prosumer
and p&s, Canon definitely seems to be out in front.

Chill out, everybody is testing preproduction models. There will be
issues with the cameras that will be worked out in the production
models. I would recommend not buying the first batch as I suspect that
this is being rushed to market. Nikon is really getting hit in the
professional market by the Canon onslaught. With the release of the
Rebel XT that was featured to out tech the D70 Nikon might be pressured
to release the D2x before it is really ready.

For me, the biggest issue with the D2x was the viewfinder. The
indicator is four corners that flash red. A photographer that only
shoots the camera in one mode or the other will not have any problems
learning the viewfinder. However, for the photographer that switches
back and forth, you are going to cut off heads or not shoot as tight as
you thought.

Canon had wind of the noise issue and was gleefully shooting the 1Ds
MkII at 3200 and shooting by a single candle.
