On late M2s you can just change the mask assembly. However, in order to fit the mask assembly in, you have to remove an optical element in the finder. The removal of the element has been associated* with the finder focusing patch flaring. Leica does have a retrofit modification kit which will put another element back in to fix that flare problem -- not the same one you just took out mind you :-) All a bit confusing and silly you say? And I would agree. Before the advent of the six frame mask set you just used the whole of the finder as the 28mm frame. Works just fine and doesn't cost a dime. On close ups just slide the lens over to the finder position before hitting the shutter to take care of parallax problems.
