When you sign up for the service, the service provider gave you a list
of thing to configure on your computer. One of the item is IP address -
and address to configure on your computer. Sometime, they give you only
one address to use, sometime they give you more than one. Sometime, the
provider assigns one to you when you start up your computer.

Here's thing that I use at home:
http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=544
This is somewhat older model. It runs at slower wireless speed.

My desktop PC connect to Ethernet port on the back of the linksys above.
My son's laptop has a built in wireless card.

I only get may be 40' radius coverage from the base station (my house is
a typical wood frame with drywall boards.) I think the signal can pass
through may be 3-4 walls at the most.

Good luck. Please let us know how it go. If you have any question,
feels free to drop me a note.
