Glenn _ I use Ilford HP5+ which scans fine.  I use Ilfords liquid 
developer, no stop bath - just H2O and then Ilford's fixer.  Other 
chemicals I use would be Kodak's hypo clearing agent to reduce rinse time 
and then photoflo for the drying process.  I do a final wash, soak in 
distilled water.  That's that.  The other option is to use a C41 
chromogenic BW film like Kodak TCN400 - have the lab process to negatives 
and then you scan them in .  I do both this and process my own.  The TCn400 
scans very well.
