It's unusual in my experience for Leica not to include a lens shade with its
lenses.  Can one infer from this that they don't think the Tri-Elmar needs
one, or is this just a tactic to make more money?

The hood for the 2nd version TE (11625) is optional.  The model number is
12450 and costs a small fortune:
