I was reading Macintouch's site today and found this referece:

which looks at the factors that go into the stability of CD and DVD disks.

The intro at the macintouch.com site says:

"As part of a long term project, the Library of congress and NIST
(National Institute of Standards and Technology - part of the US
Department of Commerce) have tested how well recordable optical disks
made with different manufacturing processes held up when exposed to
light, high temperatures and humidity levels. To date, they found that
some media performed better than others, and some disks can be
expected to reliably store data for decades.
