I was asking myself the same question earlier today, after reading Tom A.'s review of his Epson-loaned RD-1, wherein Tom graciously confessed to some mixed feelings about the whole digital experience. My conclusion was this. If at some time there is a rangefinder digital camera body compatible with Leica glass -- or some other equivalent -- that allows film-quality results (as far as megapixels etc. go) and also offers the ideal ergonomics of an M, and if I can drop off my card-full of digital images at some commercial station and then later retrieve prints or the future equivalent of slides -- no fuss, no muss, no &%$#@'ing around with computers and inkjet printers -- then I'm in like Flynn. For me, the M body is the ideal shape and size for my kind of photography. The results with current Leica glass and my preferred slide films are as close to accessible perfection as I can hope for. I like the ease and quality of custom lab service. Those are my longstanding standards. But with today's digital gear & services, we remain in a galaxy far far away.
