Greetings, Bill!

Probably what you got was "case binding," in which the covers
and the spine are constructed separately and then attached to the book
block, usually with adhesives. In a "proper" binding, the covers...or
boards...are attached to the book block before the cover material is put
on, making for a much sturdier and durable piece, albeit at a much
steeper price for this labor intensive process. The leather actually
represents a very small portion of a binding's cost.

On the other hand, I had two hymnals leather bound here in eastern
Massachusetts for a little over $100 each. Nice job, but no gold leaf.
Hand-made endpapers. Certainly hand binding can run to considerably more

than what I paid, but could also be less.
