The idea that Leica rejected this idea is far more believable than the
idea that Nikon rejected it. ;-)

it is my understanding that the patent on the Nikon manual focus lenses
has expired.

I had about six discussions with CEO Cohn over four years on this topic.
He told me Leica rejected the idea.
