Well once your bag disappears on the belt it is in the care of the airport 
not the airlines themselves.
Their main problem in this respect is preventing things getting on as you 
can imagine.
Major airports have fully automated handling .That alone in a place as big 
say Denver airport can cause the occasional problem.
But hey i sympathise have lost bags too.
