It's a great way to backup and to archive images. These come with both FireWire and USB2. You can simply buy a bare hard-drive and plug it into one of the trayes and slip it into the dock. Very slick. Since I use these for archival purposes I don't care that they are a bit noisy. The 800s might be better than the 400s. I haven't bought one of the "smart" trays - I just use the dumb ones that cost a quarter as much and hope I'm smarter than the device is.
