Subject: [Leica] OT: Shadows/highlights adjustment in Photoshop CS

Nathan,
I find I use the S/H control rather a lot as I shoot in the sun quite a
bit. My work flow is to spot the image, use a levels/curve layer to
bring my black point and white point into adjustment, then use the S/H
tool.

Usually, I find that if I set the highlight control first then open up
the shadow slider I get better results. Make sure you have opened the
dialogue box fully to see the radius slider and use that tool as well.
Adjusting the radius will definitely effect the image positively.

The last slider I use is the midtone contrast control. Almost always
the above will have made the image a little flat.

As to Brian's comments, print an image and compare it to your monitor.
If you have a radical difference then your monitor may need help. Next
time you are at a friends house, check your web images on their monitor
after making sure that the brightness control hasn't been turned to
solar surface.

I hope this helps.

Subject: [Leica] OT: Shadows/highlights adjustment in Photoshop CS

Since upgrading to Photoshop CS a few weeks ago I have received some
comments that my pictures look overexposed or washed out. I am wondering

if I am damaging them by using the Shadows/Highlights adjustment. It
seems to work like magic in recovering shadow detail in the image, so I
usually apply it, and then make the same type of Levels adjustment I did

in PS 7, to ensure that the image has the right tonality and contrast.
The question is, is the Shadows/Highlights adjustment something to be
avoided, like the simple Brightness/Contrast adjustment, or is it OK to
use but with very gentle parameters? I know that there are some
experienced PS users here, so let me hear your opinions.

TIA,
Nathan
