Yes, I believe you _are_ missing something. It's called humanity. We are
not all in your fortunate position where we can directly use our
training to help others. So we look for other ways to help.

Maybe I am missing something here. Am I to understand that you give
slide shows to groups of willing people? That is, folks come together,
sit in uncomfortable chairs, watch a bunch of pictures of starving
children and like horrors, and then actually are asked to GIVE money?

I am the iconoclast on this one but what sort of person other than a
self-esteem-challenged lunatic would attend such a performance?

I am a Christian and attend as my spirit requires. And I do give to
charity -- about 1/3 of my time as a lawyer is spent on pro bono work
for which I receive no credit either from the State Bar or the IRS. And
when some fool is stupid enough to ASK me for moeny he will recieve a
curt and calm response: "Hell, no!"

The first chapters of Matthew cover this, and, yes, I do err by hiding
my light beneath a bushel. But I would NEVER attend a nasty show of
gory pictures of suffering children for the purpose of having my
guilt-function tickled to donate money.
