That is my experience to, with the Nikon IVED and Vuescan. But that brings
the contrast to intolerable heights.
So how about Scala being designed for scanning? A marketing ploy?

Usually I have to really crank up the gamma multiplier in Vuescan to
something like 1.4 or 1.6 even with a properly exposed Scala slide.
