"fort", someone invariably corrects me.
I think there is also an issue with "stomping grounds" and "stamping
grounds".

No, it is pronounced forte with the stress on the final "e", exactly as
in
music. Context serves to distinguish between personal description ("B&W
photography is his forte") and musical instruction ("That passage should
be
played forte, not piano").
