At a Leica Day today in Torrance Calif, I had my mits on the camera.

My impressions: it's a medium weight camera- not heavy/solid, but
comfortable weight. The LCD screen dominates the back, the optical
viewfinder is a bit on the small size- for my comfort. I wasn't comfortable
using it (I'm used to my Nikon 950- simple and bright. This viewfinder
seemed a bit dark- although it is an overcast day- threatening to rain.
Wearing glasses- you have to get adjusted to focusing- I wear progressive
lens glasses. Focusing at about 8 feet I had to move my head up and down to
get the focus correct in the viewfinder.

The close focus is only about a foot and a half- forget macro.

It has so many features, switching from the LCD to the viewfinder, manual
focus, auto focus, menu changes, etc, that it would take some time to get
comfortable with the camera.

The store owner had used the camera in Las Vegas, and had about 10 lightjet
enlargements for viewing. They were very nice, sharp, good color, some done
in the evening (lights on at the casinos) and in general high quality. I
read on another list that this camera took top honors in its class in print
results at the PMA show. Some of these prints were done wide open at 1/10th
of a second- looked very good.

On another note- the Leica salesperson told me the R9 digital back will be
under $5k here (4500 euros in Germany). Due Dec. 2004.
