But these are all of course the types of trade-offs we also have to make
with film. With slide film one might also under expose slightly to avoid
blowing out the highlights. In fact the best advice for shooting digital
is to 'think chrome.'

Yes.  I just read on another forum that digital gives less noise with 
longer exposures than with higher ISO's.  I haven't tried it yet.  The 
exposures on these were about at the limit for hand-holding because I
was 
deliberately trying to push the ISO.   I would only use 3200 when I 
absolutely couldn't get the picture any other way.  I also have my 10D
set 
to underexpose to avoid blowing out highlights (more of a problem with 
digital than with film).  That's why the originals are so dark.
