Lea,

First, have you tried the Epson Matte Black ink on matte paper, Either 
Epson or Hahnemühle Photo Rag? Most users find that the glossy or 
luster papers exhibit "bronzing" in B & W.

Secondly, if you're using a Mac running OS X (or Linux on the PC) you 
should check out QuadTone RIP, an excellent freeware program for 
printing B & W with Epson printers. Sorry, it's based on the unix 
gimp-print engine, so no Windows version.
