Mark, You are correct...I know nothing of copyright laws...(As a musician I
probably should.) I took 3 semesters of Commercial Law in the mid 70's at
Loyola/DePaul when I was working as an auditor at the Harris Bank (I mention
that because you spent time in Chicago) None of the courses covered
copyrights. As a tax professional my job is to identify income. I understand
royalties, monstrously complicated things like converting BTU's to barrels
then factoring in a couple of other numbers to determine a fuel credit from
coal shales, I can do the infamous AMT, Partnerships, S Corps, C Corps,
1040NR returns, Clergy returns...but there is nothing in any tax training to
cover copyrights....the legal expenses to recover lost income because of
infringement is a tax issue....but proving loss due to that infringement
belongs to the attorneys...it is not a tax preparers issue...My
client/friend was merely speaking his mind..aloud while driving north at
70mph talking on a cell phone with an intermittent signal-----My Tax &
trumpet chops are far more developed than my knowledge of copyright laws...
