I could have sworn that I either saw or read an interview, and Ut said something to the effect that he took his Nikon from his eye, put it down, and went to help the burning girl (Kim Phuc). I must have assumed the taking it from his eye part. After having checked several on-line articles, you are, of course, correct. He carried a Nikon for longer lenses, and a Leica M2 with a 35mm Summicron, with which he took the Pulitzer Prize winning photo.
