Subject: RE: [Leica] Snapshots vs 'art'

I would suggest that "most people" neither understand, nor appreciate,
technical excellence in photography. Most people want bright colors and
a sharp image, and if they think that the photo is a "good photo" of
them, or their beloved - human, pet, car, house - they'll forgive the
lack of bright colors and focus.

Photographs are, to most people, commodities - not art objects.

Not really a contradiction here. While most people
appreciate technical excellence in a photograph, what
they cherish and miss is images of loved ones, regardless
of who pushed the shutter. In the pusuit of technical excellence, we
photographers often forget what is truly important.

The irony for me is that the Leica M, for all its superb
optics, is really about taking the "snapshot", i.e.
capturing the moment, the fleeting smile of a child,
the twinkle in a girl's eyes. I use the best lenses
because I have been fortunate enough to afford them
among other reasons. In less affluent circumstances,
I would just be as happy using the Cosina-Voigtlander
(double check spelling for MJS's sake :0), or the Jupiters.

yes absolutely Rich...yet at the same time, people trivialize photos,
and take them for granted, often assuming that everyone can be a
"photographer"....Steve
