Yes, Mark, it is hard, and results often aren't great
- - you effectively limit yourself to small DOF shots.
If the idea is a hike first, photography second then
the only helpful additional kit I'll carry is a small
folding Lastolite reflector - in this case, I'm quite
likely to be with people who wouldn't want to hang
around while I spend ages setting up a shot - i.e. my
kids! In all honesty, under those circumstances I
would much rather carry M6 or CL and a couple of
lenses, or the 3.5F - the much heavier and bulkier EOS
kit only goes if I'm expecting to find something
that'll need macro treatment.
 If the idea is a photographic hike, then I might well
carry the tripod, flash and off-camera cord, two
reflectors and a remote. Not for a multi-day hike, for
