and because of the military nature of the roads, running
them on the high ground so they could march 12 abreast.

and high crowns and good drainage which make modern driving
a nightmare.

the ideal road to move an army down 12 abreast on the high
ground.

We know who brought the idea of an autobahn to fruition and
we know that President Eisenhower was responsible for the
Interstate system in the US as a Defense Highway System.
(So why has the interstate system deteriorated faster than
the Roman roads???   You took the big U-haul trip - try to
explain it...)

Hope the guy who invented the modern interchange was named
Dr. Clover Leaf
