I agree.  I've used my SF-20 extensively and there is not a scratch on my topplate.  Not to say that it is impossible, just to say that mine hasn't scatched anything.

I have the TLA-360, and it doesn't maul the top of the camera!

I think any contact with the top plate will mar the finish...as you are
turning it.
