For what it's worth, PEC-12 (photographic emulsion cleaner) is pretty 
good at removing all kinds of uck from film.  I use it to get residue 
from old movie splices off the film.  Most camera stores sell it, but 
curiously B&H won't ship it.

Kodak recommends anhydrous isopropyl alcohol as a film cleaner.  The 70% 
stuff from the drug store works ok on things like watermarks on film.
