Sure, parts of today's Germany were part of the Roman empire--that is 
why there are vineyards in the Mosel valley today, and you can see the 
ruins in cities like Trier or Koblenz. I was always taught that the 
northern border of the Roman empire roughly corresponds to today's E40 
motorway which connects the Belgian coast via Brussels with Cologne and 
points further east. I suspect that your ancestors in Braunschweig with 
Latin names are a result of later historical developments.

Anyway, as someone else pointed out, the development of English was more 
influenced by the Norman invasion in 1066 than by the Roman conquest 
1000 years earlier.
