A backpack is a great idea. I use one in preference to a shoulder bag. it
forces you to be more decisive about the kit you have around your neck. I
use a simple MEC (www.mec.ca) backpack plus an MEC fanny pack for film.
Lenses are in cargo pant leg pockets generally, bodies worn, one round neck
and one on shoulder. Lightmeter strap is attached to belt loop and meter
itself goes in pant change pocket.

I find this totally comfortable even when my back is playing hell.

The idea is to wear everything you need on your body and just use the
backpack for portage to/from the location, plus ancillary bits and bobs. I
have carried 4x5, digital, monopod, VR rig and Leica simultaneously with
this arrangement, for several hours. w
