Mitch,

Thanks for the links. I wish I had gotten them before I purchased the
microdrive. The failure rate at high use seems unacceptable. What
worries me even more are the compatibility problems with Nikon cameras.
I pulled my wallet out too fast.

Sam...

I've had an IBM 340MB Microdrive for several years; get
only the newer ones that are 500MB or larger if you
choose to use one. The newer ones use less juice and
are better all around. Lots of info can be found here:
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/micro/index.htm

If you are looking for bullet proof reliability, get a
Compact Flash card instead. I work for Gannett, parent
company of USA TODAY; our photogs have had major issues
with the Microdrives and have gone back to using just
CF cards. All sorts of info can be found here:

http://www.robgalbraith.com/diginews/2000-11/2000_11_01_microdrive.html

http://www.robgalbraith.com/reports/microdrive_feedback.html

If you will be shooting above 9,800 feet in elevation,
DO NOT use a Microdrive; they employ an air bearing to
spin and altitudes above that figure will cause the
head to grind on the media platter.

Hope that helps you.

/Mitch
