My understanding of it is that the latent image is degraded by gamma 
particle bombardment that is a usual, on-going, daily happening. The more 
sensitive the film the more it it affected. All those latent image spots 
that had an electron knocked off by exposure to light (visible radiation) 
thereby becoming the latent image get rearranged by the constant gamma 
particle exposure. I think heat and humidity work against you too.

Some real expert can tell it better or correct me if I'm wrong.
(on the LUG I am sure this will happen along with a few non experts too)
