It's not that the camera that is obsolete won't continue to provide the same
service you bought it for: it's that many of the ancillary devices become
unavailable.  Things like batteries, smart media cards if you bet on the
wrong voltage, cables that are proprietary to the camera, smart media cards
now that SD is out.

I realize this is a period of tremendous growth and change, but the
designers and engineers need to spend some time on standards so that a
purchaser has some reasonable expectation that the camera will be useable in
two or three years.  I know, if its proprietary its more profitable but only
if someone buys the things.
