The photographs have to illustrate an editorial article. Editorial photography is totally different from advertising photography and art photography. The editors want a photograph that will illustrate the article that they already have selected for their magazine, textbook, or encyclopedia. The requested subjects can be very esoteric and require a thorough filing system with many key words. About 90% of stock photography has to be in color and include as many races and genders as possible. Everything should be shot in both vertical and horizontal and include space for titles. I would love to make a living doing only documentary photography, but have not found a way to make that possible. Currently the stock photography funds the documentary photography which I do to feed my soul and give me a reason to keep photographing.
