Try this method, it seems to lose fewer tones in the conversion:

 Convert to Lab color Image: Mode: Lab color

 Open the Channels palette Window: Show Channels

 Drag the a and b channels to the trash can icon at the bottom of the
Channels palette

 Convert to Grayscale Image: Mode: Grayscale

 If you like the resuts, record a Photoshop action.
