Joseph Codispoti writes (with big snips)
|
| One day, the truck I was driving began to misfire and I
drove it to the
| motor pool for service. I greeted the grease monkey with a
tortured cigar
| with inch long ash drooping from it in his mouth with: "I
say corporal, my
| truck is malfunctioning".
| He gave me a long and silent look, looked towards the
truck, looked at me
| again and said: "you mean it's all screwd up, don't you".

ROFL...this reminds me of the time I took a foreign language
course (Japanese), the literal translation of one of the
interogative words was "is understanding taking place."
Ever since then, I have been more concerned with meaning
than formal grammar. Grammar is a tool for
precision...meaning does not necessarily follow (and to be
precise does not necessarily not follow--- unless you are
one of those lawyer-folks). Life has been easier since this
realization.
