Julian,  tilt the flash up something less than 45 degrees so that a
significant portion of the flash is going forward to the subject.  This
places the sensor in a position to read light directly off the Stofen
instead of light reflecting off the subject.

It seemed expedient to shield the sensor the first time so I cut the bottom
off of a 35mm plastic film holder and stuck it to the flash with some
florists wax.(I was at a wedding and florists wax was available at the right
price).  I think there are any number of ways to shield the sensor from
light coming from the flash.

As for the 24mm, I tilt the head up as always when using this device.
