To continue the discussion, even though I have a B1 and a G1377M, I detest ball heads. I only use a ball head on my G1228 tripod when I want light weight and as compact as possible. I never use a ball head on my G1349 tripod. I normally use pan tilt heads as you can adjust elevation and tilt independently. I use a Gitzo Rational No.2 or a G1371M 99% of the time.
