Someone wrote in the Leica customers forum, that older M cameras had a
straight mirror for for brightline illumination, whereas the later models have a
parabolic mirror. The parabolic mirror would shed more light towards the
brightline mask, making the frames brighter,. However if light hits the parabolic
mirror in a wrong angle, light is concentrated in the rangefinder patch! 
To me this sounds like a good explanation.
