The summation is for those times when one wants: a) higher speed, b) greater sharpness, c) better quality control than lab offers, d) less cost, e) better longevity, f) contrast control, g) different grain effect. Lots to think about and probably enough to make me order those 20 brown bottles for the Xtol :) Thanks again..........Julian - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eric" <ericm@pobox.com> To: <leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us> Sent: Monday, February 18, 2002 5:57 AM Subject: [Leica] Re: With XP-2, why develop B/W? Julian: >I ask myself "why not just >use XP-2 with its smooth tonality and fine grain, then pay Wal-Mart $1.80 >for C-41? Quality (and convenience) and cost. I can't get quality negatives from the one hour places I've tried around here. Very minute scratches that don't print...but that are picked up when scanning at 4000 dpi. You can see them with a loupe on the original when you look for them. There aren't any good pro labs that are close by. So it's also more convenient to do them myself. I'd rather be developing than spending time on the roads in rush hour. :) The next is cost. Why would I want to pay close to 20 times more for less quality? I can develop them myself for 10 cents a roll. But that's more of a justification than a reason. If I got better quality doing it myself at home, it was really inconvenient, and it cost more, I'd still do it myself at home for the quality.
