I would try the following - 1) Check out Rantoul, IL. Former home of Chanute AFB. Might find some interesting scenes of a small American town's evolution after a military base closing. 2) The University is very nice. Unfortunately this time of year isn't the time to do any street photography there (all of the coeds will be bundled up) ... but if architecture is your thing ... 3) Farms, farms, farms ... corn mostly ... think vastness of the midwest ... and lots of it.
