Glad to help.  It doesn't feel good when your Leica doesn't seem to do what
it is "supposed" to do.

With regard to viewfinder brightness, I have read that there is some
advantage to replacing the original 'R4' focusing screen with the later 'R'
screen.  You can tell which you have by using a loupe or othe magnifier to
read the little tab on the focusing screen.

Julian, many many thanks.

The trick is to press the shuter button down *very* far, until the LED's
for the exposure mode go out, as you said.  I was not pressing down far
enough.  Ahh. A real relief.  I think I'll try a Softie on it and see if
that helps any - it is a pretty deep press for me to get the lock, the
R3 locks much higher up.

I like the R4 - a nice handling camera, reasonably bright with my 70-210
1:4 lens too.  So far the results on film have been very good as well,
and that is always nice, isn't it?
