The trick is to press the shuter button down *very* far, until the LED's for the exposure mode go out, as you said. I was not pressing down far enough. Ahh. A real relief. I think I'll try a Softie on it and see if that helps any - it is a pretty deep press for me to get the lock, the R3 locks much higher up. I like the R4 - a nice handling camera, reasonably bright with my 70-210 1:4 lens too. So far the results on film have been very good as well, and that is always nice, isn't it?
