Surely if it is an interaction between the grain size and scanner resolution 
then changing the scanner resolution to another setting not necessarily 
higher will resolve the problem.

On the question of ICE, I found that with Vuescan ICE seemed to work with 
B7W and Kodachrome films. Don't ask me to explain because I can't!
