Particularly some of the free ones like Tripod or Yahoo/Geocities can be quite slow, and the banner ads slow them down even more. That was the main reason I switched to a paid-for, ad-free service. Short of changing their web hosting service, people should pay attention to image size and also avoid coloured backgrounds, Java scripts and whatever other fancy frills one can add to a web site.
