If you look at the lens cross sections, the lens was redesign significantly
for the latest mount with the built in hood. The design is basically the
same but the elements are ground differently as they are mounted in a
better, more precise and secure way. At the very least, the new mounting
system provides better control of internal flare and less sample variation.
They also seem to have tweaked the optical design enough to justify moving
the close focus from 1 metre to 0.7 metre.
