Barleben was a contributor to the original Leica Manual, writing the section 
on the proper use of color filters along with Henry M. Lester.

Indeed, the Leica Manual was a conglomeration of input from many of the 
pioneers of miniture photography.  It was the first really complete guide 
for the user, since it compiled information from so many sources on so many 
topics.  Even now it is an educational read.
