The problem with the filter in front is that reflections off the 
_back_ of the filter can sneak onto the image, just like shooting 
through a window when the light behind you is as strong or stronger 
than the light in front of you.

Roscoe 'gels' are often not gels, but polyester, which is not good 
optically, and the thickness is often too great. Make sure you get 
real gels that are optically OK. You can get Lee gels, or Kodak gels 
(lots of stores still have some kicking around) and cut them and 
stick them to the back of the lens.
