Hi Alfie,

Take them to bed with you! ;-) Not very cuddly but beats having them ripped
off in the middle of the night.

It depends on how much gear you're talking about, 1 camera or a half dozen
with attendant lenses and all the other stuff, cases etc.

If it's just one camera never put it down any where, always wear it on your
shoulder or around neck
