Subject: [Leica] Re: camera for 10-year-old

I'd recommend the Pentax K-1000 for sure. Older screw-mount Pentaxes
such as the Spotmatics, while rugged and beautifully built cameras, have
metering electronics that cannot be replaced (except maybe by
cannibalizing another Pentax) when they go bad, as they are likely to do
because of age. Learning to use a hand-held meter may or may not be a
lot to ask of a 10-year-old. If you get the kid a K-1000 and he really
enjoys using it, the world is full of a wide range of inexpensive but
mostly excellent used Pentax lenses, both newer bayonet mount and older
screw mount, that will work on that camera, the older ones with a
bayonet adapter.
