I have a friend who uses the 1.4x APO with his 400 and 560 f/6.8 Telyts and when he handles the camera motion issues properly the results are excellent.  Note that a stock APO converter, and the R version of the non-APO converter will not fit on your SL2.  You may be able to retrofit the converter with a Leicaflex bayonet flange as I have done with my 14256 extension tube.  There was a Leicaflex version of the non-APO 2x converter but they're scarce.  Optically it's the same as the R version.
