Peter, I'd have a hard time recommending a PhotoSmart for Kodachromes.  It can work well for high-key photos but it doesn't have the dynamic range for a more typical Kodachrome.  I haven't tried scanning much B&W with it, but the only film type that scans consistently well is color negative.
