You are exactly right as to defects in the rear lens element causing
moderate to severe image degradation. These will show up at small stops if
the marks are near the center or the element, actually the image suffers all
the time it is just less visible at wider apertures.

Run your fingernail over the defects, if there is no dimple, dent, or groove
then yes you can probably restore the lens. If the lens is still under
passport then New Jersey is the place to be.  If not under passport then
John Van Stelton is the place to be.  E-mail John@focalpointlens.com for
